The first time I tried my hand at directing was during my Alevel Theatre Studies course and I loved it! It was incredibly exciting to me that you could work with a team of creative people to stage a piece of theatre, with just a script as a starting point.
I went on to do a Drama degree at Exeter University where I did lots of acting and directing on my course. I also choreographed some shows in my spare time including West Side Story and Carmina Burana for the Northcott Theatre.
After uni, I trained to be a secondary Drama teacher and eventually became Head of Drama at a Swindon school. The kids I taught were great but I was desperate for a creative outlet and I needed likeminded adults.
I joined Gatecrash when it started in January 2015. It was just what I needed. I played Dawn in our debut production of ‘Jerusalem’ by Jez Butterworth and Kate in ‘Breathing Corpses’ by Laura Wade. To cut a long story short, I left teaching at the end of 2015 so I could say yes to more opportunities and achieve some artistic dreams. One such dream has been directing ‘Constellations’ by Nick Payne for the annual Smash and Grab project.
I chose the play and have been mentored by the lovely Anna Friend, who has also designed the show. Jordan and Becky are a fantastic cast; their generosity and commitment have made it a joy. This project has re-ignited my passion for directing and I am extremely thankful to Gatecrash for that.
